Microfinance drives rural economy: Md. Anaet Karim shares insights

Holiday Post: Md. Anaet Karim, Executive Director of S Nabo Uddipon Sanggo, has been deeply engaged in empowering underprivileged communities. With nearly two decades of experience, including 11 years with BRAC, Karim has dedicated his career to grassroots development. In a recent conversation, he shed light on the significance of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in shaping rural economies and empowering communities.
Stability as a Cornerstone
Karim emphasized that institutional stability is a prerequisite for sustainable development in the microfinance sector. “Our activities play a major role at the grassroots level, fostering economic growth, reducing discrimination, and ensuring women’s rights. Stability ensures we can continue these critical contributions,” he asserted.
A Lifeline for Rural Entrepreneurs
MFIs are the backbone of rural economic activities, Karim pointed out. “In rural areas, almost every small-to-medium entrepreneur relies on financial support from MFIs. Loans are not just for businesses—they enable individuals to buy rickshaws, migrate abroad, or start farming. The 2020-2021 lockdown highlighted how vital MFIs are to rural economies,” he said.
Policy Simplification and Transparency:
Karim advocated for streamlining microcredit policies to strengthen the rural economy. “A comprehensive assessment and proper government support can help us build a prosperous society. Simplifying policies will enhance business ventures and small-scale economic activities,” he suggested.
The microfinance sector’s service-oriented nature requires borrowers to acquire financial literacy, savings discipline, and investment management skills. “Educating stakeholders and improving financial transparency are critical for the sector’s sustainable growth,” Karim added.
Collaborative Approach to Community Development
Karim underscored the importance of collaboration in bridging knowledge gaps and addressing field-level challenges. “Our approach prioritizes collective discussions to develop actionable strategies. Empowering local communities is at the heart of what we do,” he explained.
Commitment to Resilience
S Nabo Uddipon Sanggo is dedicated to fostering socioeconomic resilience through microfinance. By aligning with regulatory standards and focusing on community needs, the organization aims to empower the underprivileged and create a just society.
“Microfinance is more than lending—it’s about fostering self-reliance and resilience. We’re committed to addressing community needs and driving sustainable development,” Karim concluded.
